Average Monthly Sales Data - incorrect?

Hi - am I the forums' first poster ? :P

I am tracking a certain seller on the AU site, and find that the information displayed by SellerDome is completely different to my own findings.

SellerDome states:
Date Updated: Jul-08-08
Monthly Sales: $7,854
Successful Listings: 126
Items Sold: 166

I check the Seller's completed items every monday (for sales during the previous week) and all sold items entered onto an Excel spreadsheet. Between 08 June 08 and 08 July 08, I total only $2921.23 for the same period... a significant difference !

And the quantities are wrong too... I only found 102 items sold !

Firstly - you say "Monthly Sales" - is that an average, or for the PAST month, or 30 days or what? The heading states "Average Monthly Sales Data"... if it's an average then what is the period that it's averaged over, the past year, or what?

Anyway - I am wondering of your data collection technique suffers the same flaw as Goofbay's... I seem to have found that a sale of an item triggers the inclusion of ALL sales for a particular item - so even if the only one sale was made that month the total of all of that item is counted.

The problem seems to occur for items in Stores, where they are listed in "Good 'Til Cancelled" format. In this case, one item number could last for months or years, and sell 10s or even hundreds of times. Now, if only 1 of those items sold in the past month, is SellerDome then counting ALL sales against that item?

For example, checking the seller's completed listings, I find that the oldest listings started on 01 Sept 2007 and are due to end on 27 July 2008 (but will auto-renew for another 30 days thereafter). Thus, if your tool captures a transaction for one of that item this month, does it only count the $ for ONE item, or for every sale of that item since Sept 07?

In other words, if that item had a quantity of 100, and had sold 20 since September '07, does your calculations note that a sale was made this month, then consider that as a normal 30-day Multiple Item BIN and therefore count the TOTAL quantity sold (20) rather than just the one item that sold in the past 30 days?

I am not sure if what I think is happening is correct, and I am also fairly sure that I may not have explained myself very well at all. But there must be a reason for such outrageous differences between actual Sales (reported by Ebay itself) and services like SellerDome and Goofbay. I am thinking that perhaps the Ebay API is giving misleading information, and/or you are reading it incorrectly?

Here's what we're looking to add to SellerDome.com:

Rankings by country: breakdown the top sellers for the most popular countries
Stats on number of eBay Sellers NARU: have a list of sellers who go NARU each day
Stats on number of eBay Sellers losing PowerSeller status: have a list of sellers who lose their PowerSeller status each day
Relative rankings for eBay Sellers: provide a "SellerDome" relative ranking for users that considers what the user sells, where they sell it and how much they sell
Registration for SellerDome.com users including profile information: allow users to register with SellerDome.com and link to their eBay User IDs in order to provide additional information (i.e.: internet storefront website)

What do you think? There are many different possibilities based on the core data SellerDome collects. Do you have any additional ideas?
